The Overseas Young Chinese Forum (OYCF) and The 1990 Institute are
pleased to announce winners of the Joint OYCF – The 1990 Institute
Research Fellowship for 2005.
The 1990 Institute has granted $6,000 Research Fellowship to each of
the following two projects:
1. Chinese Village Elections and Taxation
Kay Shimizu and Jeremy Wallace
PhD Candidates, Political Science
Stanford University
2. Labor Training Vouchers as a Way of Poverty Alleviation: A Pilot
Study in Zhejiang Province, China
Yiu Por Chen
Assistant Professor, Public Services Graduate Program
DePaul University
Initiated in 2001, the Joint Research Fellowship Program sponsors research
projects by overseas scholars, professionals and graduate students that
analyze economic and social issues facing China, and explore implications
and solutions from a policy perspective. Preferential consideration
is given to projects that involve fieldwork in China or collaboration
with researchers in China.
This year, we received thirteen research proposals from the US, Canada,
Europe and China. Our applicants include Ph.D. candidates, scholars
and professionals. Due to the high quality of the applications, the
selection process has been an extremely difficult one. Therefore, we
have decided to grant two Fellowships this year under the same budget.
We truly appreciate all our applicants' strong dedication to research
relating to China as well as their support for our Program. In the coming
years, OYCF will continue to work with The 1990 Institute to support
as many qualified projects as possible.
The success of our Research Fellowship Program depends on your continued
support. As we congratulate this year’s winners, we would also
like to take this opportunity to thank all the applicants this year,
and encourage you all to participate in this Program by bringing to
us your best project proposals.
