郭岱君:蒋介石日记和抗战历史

内容:全面性的介绍蒋日记,蒋的青年、中年时代,崛起的原因,对日本的态度、
与盟国的关系、抗战时的心情、战略、他的成败 ( 包括 918、剿共、西安事变、抗
战、 对日和谈、 史迪威事件等), 深入蒋介石的内心世界, 揭露许多不为人知的
秘密, 但也展现中国在20世纪的蜕变。

主讲嘉宾介绍
斯坦福大学胡佛研究所研究员郭岱君博士: 郭岱君博士获美国俄勒冈大学政治
学博士学位。曾任中华民国总统府第一局副局长,总统府发言人,淡江大学美国
研究所副教授。2000年起 担任胡佛研究所研究员至今。

背景:
胡佛研究所为美国收藏最多中国近代史文献,尤其是二战时期的档最为丰富。在美
人方面,包括和中国有密切关系的史迪威(Joseph Stilwill),魏德迈(Albert Wedemeyer)
,陈纳德(Claire Chennualt)三位将军,及以协助中国建立情报的梅勒斯(Milton
Miles)的家人,都将相关的文件捐捐给了胡佛研究所。

在中国人方面,有宋子文、张嘉□、陈立夫、黄郛、陈洁如、黄仁霖、胡适、陈独
秀等人。其中以宋子文档案最为完整。中国共产党早期建党资料,胡佛研究所也有
收藏,其中有许多为共产党所无。蒋介石和蒋经国都有终身写日记的习惯,这方面
数量相当多。
蒋介石自1917年开始,不论生活有多动乱,都会记录下来,成为珍贵文件。
在宋子文方面,有19大盒数据,包括建立中央银行,在财政部长、代理行政院长任内,
如何建立起国民党财政制度。如何以健康不佳为由四度辞职,以及和蒋介石之间的
恩怨。

insights on the Mainland stock market. Prior to joining Citigroup, Lan worked for Merrill Lynch, holding a similar position as Head of China Research. She completed an MA in International Economics and Finance at Brandeis University in the US, and has over 12 years of experience covering China related stocks. Path of Vanke and Dream of the Nation (万科的道路和民族的梦想)
Date: Monday, April 24, 2006

Mr. Wang Shi of Vanke Group (万科集团) will come to Hong Kong to share with us his thinking on what have happened in China and where the Chinese society is moving based on his experience in Vanke. Mr. Wang Shi is Chairman of China Vanke Co. and is one of the most outstanding figures in the Chinese business world. He graduated from Lanzhou Railway College in 1978 majoring in water supply studies, and has worked for the Guangzhou Railway Bureau, Guangzhou Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation Committee and Shenzhen Special Region Development Company. He set up the Shenzhen Exhibition Centre of Modern Science and Education Equipment in 1984, and acted as the General Manager. When the Centre was re-structured into China Vanke Co. Ltd. in 1988, Mr. Wang became the Chairman and General Manager of the new company.

Outside work, Mr. Wang has wide-ranging interests including writing and exploration. He recently published his autobiography 《道路与梦想 -- 我与万科二十年》 . His greatest adventures to date include climbing Mountain Everest and exploring the South Pole on foot.

Ms Leung became the first Secretary for Justice of the HK Special Administrative Region on July 1, 1997. She was the Chief Executive's chief legal adviser and an ex-officio member of the Executive Council. Leung was awarded the Grand Bauhinia Medal in July 2002 for her distinguished public service, and for her significant contributions in ensuring the successful implementation of the new constitutional order under the "One Country, Two Systems" concept.

Dr. Cheung Kwai Yeung is the executive committee member of the Hong Kong Press Council. He is a veteran journalist and has worked in Hong Kong media for more than 26 years. Before joining Radio Television Hong Kong, he worked in TVB news, Ming Pao and Chinese Television Network. He also published numerous books including 明报与金庸.

Dr. Cheung will discuss topics: (1) How the media works in Hong Kong; (2) the background of the media self-regulation framework that is being initiated by Hong Kong Press Council; and (3) interesting case studies related to regulations on indecency and privacy.

The Taiwan Election
We are pleased to invite Ms. Kuo Tai-Chun to speak with us next week on March 23 (Tuesday).  Ms. Kuo is one of our OYCF friends and is currently lecturing in Center for East Asian Studies at Stanford University.  Ms. Kuo has authored various books related to the economic and political issues in mainland China and Taiwan.  Ms. Kuo graduated with her Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Oregon.

Ms. Kuo would like to share with us her first hand observations of the 3.20 election and talk about the latest political development in Taiwan.  The talk will start at 8pm.

The Economic Integration of Hong Kong and The Pearl River Delta

Speaker: Dr. Zhu Wenhui

Dr. Zhu Wenhui is a research fellow of the China Business Center of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He is a frequent commentator in the Phoenix Star TV's programs and columnist of the Asiaweek magazine. He has published a number of articles, reports and books about China, Hong Kong, Asian and international economy. Followed by a 1-hour Q&A/discussion, Dr. Zhu will give a 45-60 minutes speech based on his recent extensive research over the development and prospect of the integration between Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta.
